City & Guilds Qualified

Can anyone do the testing?
No. The people carrying out the PAT Testing must be competent. Our engineers, after carrying out in-house training, are City & Guilds trained in Appliance Testing. Many individuals/companies are not properly qualified to carry out PAT testing including some 'electricians'. Check that they can supply Calibration Certificates, Insurance details, Qualifications etc. This ensures that you as the Duty Holder have taken all possible steps to ensure that the person/company carrying out the appliance testing is competent.

Managers of premises have a legal responsibility to ensure that the electrical equipment in their charge is safe. To achieve this level of safety through use of the Code of Practice requires three categories of specifically trained person (in addition to a general awareness by all staff of the dangers of electricity) as follows:

(a) managers of the premises
(b) managers of the inspection and testing organisation
(c) those who inspect and test.

The above division of tasks and responsibilities does not presume that one person may not carry out two or all of the required functions. It is, however, stressed that a person must be trained in each of the areas and be competent to undertake the work and interpret the results as appropriate.

To set a standard of training in the UK, the IEE has combined with the City & Guilds of London Institute to provide two courses and associated certificated examinations for

(a) managers of premises and of inspection and testing organisations
and
(b) those who inspect and test.
